Standard Serving Size for Vegetables

Enjoy plenty of fresh, frozen and tinned vegetables in your diet. It's recommended that you aim for at least three servings each day of vegetables, following are standard serving sizes for different types of vegetables:


  • 1 medium potato, kumara, yam or taro
  • 1/2 cup of chopped salad or 1-2 cups of loose salad greens
  • 1/2 cup of cooked vegetables
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 small carrot


In order to get a good feel for quantities you may want to use kitchen measuring cups for serving your food in the short term. This will help you to learn exactly what a cup of salad of 1/2 cup of vegetables looks like on a plate.
