Standard Serving Size for Meat, Beans and Eggs

Choose lean meats, chicken, seafood, along with legumes such as beans, peas and lentils for a good source of protein in your diet. These foods also provide iron, zinc and other useful nutrients. It's recommended that you aim for at least one serving each day of lean meats, beans or eggs, following are standard serving sizes for the different foods:


  • 2 slices of cooked meat (100g) - approximately the size of a deck of cards
  • 1 medium steak (120g) - about the size of the palm of your hand
  • 3/4 cup of mince or casserole
  • 3/4 cup of cooked beans
  • 2 drumsticks or 1 chicken leg or 1/2 chicken breast (110g)
  • 1 medium fillet of fish (100g)
  • 1 medium egg


In order to get a good feel for quantities you may want to use kitchen measuring cups for serving your food in the short term.
